Strong Blessing

Devotional Contributor: Steve Shuman

Scripture:

Hebrews 11:20 "By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau in regard to their future."

Observation:

I'm the blessed father of three wonderful kids, 15, 12 and 9—each one a beautiful gift from God. As I've watched them grow, it's been so fun seeing the different talents, personalities and qualities that God has given each of them. And even when my wife and I dream about what the future holds for them, I can't help but wonder what God has in store for them next.

Probably like you, I've also read the story of Isaac blessing his children many times. As I read it again, I imagine that he spent much of his time thinking of what his sons would become and the legacy they would someday leave. Similarly, I also think ahead to what God has in store for my children—things such as trusting God to keep them safe, fulfill the dreams He plants in their hearts, provide for their needs, provide strong, uplifting relationships in their lives and that my kids ultimately find their joy in Him.

These days, I don't think we view a father's blessing in the same way they did in biblical times. But I believe that there is power in a father's blessing. And in the case of Isaac's blessing, it seemed to not only set the course for who his sons were to become but literally established them on that path almost like a promise. I wonder, do I have the same impact on my kids? Can I give them my blessing in such a way that puts them on a path to a right relationship with God and with those around them?

Application:

I'm so intrigued at what Isaac saw for his sons and their futures. And as he began to give his blessing, I'm sure his mind reflected on that day, many years before, when his father was asked by God to sacrifice his own son, Isaac. I'm sure he understood God's eternal faithfulness to protect and provide for his kids like God protected and provided for him when it looked like he would be sacrificed. What an awesome example for how God provides.  As I look ahead to my kids future, I'm sorry to say that often those dreams are filled with worry. But knowing God's faithfulness, I can give them my blessing with full assurance that He will protect them, provide for them and lead them in ways that I cannot. But it's my duty as their father to speak of God's abundant grace and continual faithfulness in my life so they see it in theirs. And not only that, but like Isaac, give them my blessing so they know who they are and how much they are loved.

Request:

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you so much for your love and kindness for each of us. Your mercies are new every morning and great is your faithfulness to us. Even when we don't deserve it, you still guide our steps as our loving father and I am thankful beyond words for that unconditional love. Help me love and guide my children in the same way, that they may follow you with all their hearts and find their future in you! Amen.
